AGHIOS GEORGIOS

St. George Cathedral, which stands emblematically at the top of the Catholic medieval town of Syros, along with the Orthodox church of the Resurrection located on the hill of neoclassical Hermoupolis, promote the peaceful coexistence of the two Christian denominations on the island.
Νatural deterioration, lightning strikes and inefficient interventions, led to the necessity of restoring the complex of St. George at the form that it had in the 19th century, attributed to the work of architect Chatzisimos. The project, which spanned three years, included: the Church, the Narthex, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery, the Centre for Historical Studies, the Episcopal residence, the courtyards and the restoration of a ruined residence into a Research Centre.

The primary goal of the project was to rescue the monumental complex, which was in a poor condition due to several damages, insufficient maintenance and lightning strikes. Besides all the interventions that had taken place within the period of 180 years, since the construction of the present church and relevant structures, didn’t show the proper respect to the original architectural design nor to its aesthetic appeal.
Moreover, a further goal was the restoration of the figure of the individual components as well as of the overall complex, playing a significant role in Syros.
The final results justify the efforts of the scholars and all the others who were involved and have contributed to the project.
