plethōra

The present proposal concerns the design of 21 luxurious vacation residences in the area of Charvouri, in Ancient Epidaurus, in a region of unique natural beauty, scattered with citrus trees and surrounded by olive groves within a breath’s distance from the sacred landmark of Epidaurus. The residences are spread across a total area of twelve plots collectively named plethōra. This name derives from the Greek word “πληθώρα” and is closely linked to the abundant land of the Peloponnese. The long-standing historical background as well as the perennial beneficial climatic conditions of the wider area of Epidaurus constitute an integral part of the overall character of this proposal. Subsequently, the project as a whole aspires to strengthen the relationship of the inhabitants with the land, but also with the richness of the historical and cultural heritage of the wider area.

Basic architectural references for the present proposal were the theater of Epidaurus and the monuments in the archaeological site of the Asclepius sanctuary. On the one hand, the seamless adaptation to the space, the perfection of proportions, and the excellent acoustics of the architecture of the ancient theater are elements that inspired an architecture that respects the past, primarily using local materials (limestone), while also meeting the requirements of a modern holiday house. Within the framework of a holistic journey that the visitor of the Argolid land is called to experience, the proximity to the aquatic element breathes new life into the design of the residence. Subsequently, staying in this place is transformed into a unique experience that allows the user to get closer to the natural environment, water, and land.

The starting point of the architectural proposal is the landscape itself. The natural element guides the design from the external spaces towards the internal ones. Following the existing natural topography of the area, this proposal is primarily based on the harmonious highlighting of the Mediterranean landscape and the utilization of the unobstructed view towards the sea. Through the journey of the five senses, the tranquility of the nature, the existing vegetation, the freshness, and the harmonious lines of the surrounding mountain peaks, there is a focus on the Mediterranean microclimate of the area (air flow, solar energy, local building materials), thereby incorporating the basic principles of bioclimatic architecture into the design of the residences.

These modern constructions feature sleek and simple lines, exuding a sense of effortless luxury derived from the use of soft colours and natural materials like stone and wood. The residences, as a whole, consist of a two-storey main building with a basement. In plots Ι,ΙΙ and IV, the residences include subterranean sections. Inside, the spaces maintain a serene atmosphere, with subtle contrasts in textures and material tones. Mosaic is chosen for the flooring, while walls and ceilings are plastered, except for a few exceptions where thatch or exposed stonework is incorporated. The connection to the outdoors is seamless, without distinct boundaries. The outdoor areas of the residences feature a swimming pool lined internally with pebble gravel, reflecting the colours of the sky and nature. Additionally, there is an outdoor BBQ area and a covered parking space for two vehicles.
